Valladolid is the ideal base for Chichén Itzá — a beautiful colonial city with cenotes, excellent restaurants, and accommodation at all price points. Staying here rather than at the site means arriving before the day-tour crowds from Cancún and Mérida.

Palenque

The town of Palenque is the main base, with a range of accommodation from backpacker hostels to jungle eco-lodges. It sits 8 km from the archaeological zone, easily reached by taxi or combi. The jungle setting around the site makes eco-lodges here a special option.

Uxmal

Base town: Mérida·Distance to site: 1.5 hours drive (80 km south)

Most visitors day-trip to Uxmal from Mérida — one of Mexico's most elegant colonial cities with outstanding accommodation at all levels. Staying closer to the site is also possible if you want to see it at sunrise or attend the nightly sound-and-light show.

Calakmul

Base town: Xpujil·Distance to site: 2.5 hours drive (60 km jungle road)

Calakmul is one of the most remote major sites, and accommodation options near the site itself are limited. Xpujil is the nearest town with services, while a handful of jungle lodges on the road to the site offer an immersive experience in the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve.

Xpujil has a few basic hotels and guesthouses. Facilities are simple but adequate as a base for a guided tour to Calakmul. Local tour operators in town arrange transport and guided visits.

Tulum

Base town: Tulum Beach / Tulum town·Distance to site: Walking distance from the beach hotel zone; 4 km from Tulum town

Tulum offers a unique combination: stay on the beach a short walk from the ruins, or base yourself in the cheaper Tulum Pueblo (town). The beach zone hotels are expensive but unmatched for location; the town has better value and easy colectivo access to the site.

Tikal

Base town: Flores·Distance to site: 1.5 hours by minibus (65 km)

Flores is a charming island town on Lake Petén Itzá, linked to the mainland by a causeway. It has the best selection of hotels and restaurants in the Petén and a relaxed traveller atmosphere. Alternatively, staying inside the national park puts you at the site at dawn.

Caracol

Base town: San Ignacio·Distance to site: 2.5 hours drive (80 km mountain road)

San Ignacio is the lively adventure capital of western Belize and the only practical base for Caracol. The town sits on the Macal River and has an excellent range of accommodation. All visits to Caracol require a guided tour from San Ignacio — the road is only open on certain days.
