Copán Ruinas is the rare base town that is a genuine destination in its own right. This compact, safe, and beautiful village — just 1 km from the entrance to one of the Maya world's most artistically refined sites — has developed an excellent traveller infrastructure: good restaurants, boutique hotels, and a laid-back colonial atmosphere. The combination of superb ruins and a pleasant village makes Copán one of the most rewarding stops on La Ruta Maya.

Getting to Copán Ruinas
Shuttles from Antigua (6–7 hr, ~US$35) via the El Florido border crossing. Shuttles from San Pedro Sula (3 hr). The El Florido crossing is efficient — typically 30–45 min.
Getting to the Sites
Copán ruins: 15-minute walk from the central park, or a 5-minute tuk-tuk ride. All tour operators in town arrange guides and site visits.
