San Cristóbal de las Casas
A high-altitude colonial gem and living indigenous Maya city — a cultural detour with strong connections to the living Maya tradition.

San Cristóbal de las Casas sits at 2,200 m in the Chiapas highlands — noticeably cooler than the jungle lowlands and dramatically different in character. It is one of Mexico's most culturally rich colonial cities, with a strong Tzotzil and Tzeltal Maya presence, extraordinary textile markets, and an active indigenous culture that connects directly to pre-Columbian traditions. It is not close to the major ruins, but for travelers on the overland route between Palenque and Guatemala it is an essential overnight stop.
