San Ignacio
The adventure capital of Belize and the indispensable base for the west — Caracol, Xunantunich, and Cahal Pech are all accessible from here.
San Ignacio is the lively, unpretentious heart of Belize's Cayo District — a riverside market town with a strong traveller culture, excellent budget accommodation, and the best concentration of jungle lodges in Central America. It is the only practical base for visiting Caracol (a guided day trip), and Xunantunich is just 2 km from town, reached by the famous hand-cranked ferry. The Macal River runs along the town's edge and is used for canoeing and swimming.
