Pyramids & Monuments

Structure II
The largest pyramid at the site and one of the tallest Maya pyramids ever built, rising approximately 45 metres above the jungle floor. Unlike many Maya pyramids, Structure II was expanded through successive phases, each encasing the previous structure, and retains temples on multiple levels accessed by separate staircases. Its summit offers an unbroken canopy stretching to the horizon in every direction, with no sign of modern development.
Structure I
The second-largest pyramid at the site, rising 38 metres directly opposite Structure II across the main plaza. Together the two great pyramids create a twin-pyramid arrangement that dominates the ceremonial centre, a spatial relationship that may have had astronomical significance in tracking the movement of the sun across the plaza during key calendar events.
Stelae & Royal Portraits
Calakmul holds the largest number of stelae of any Maya site — over 120 carved monuments, many bearing portraits of the city's rulers and their queens. The repeated depiction of female rulers alongside male counterparts is unusual in Maya art and has led scholars to propose that royal women held exceptional political authority here. Several stelae retain traces of polychrome paint applied centuries after they were originally carved.
