Monuments & Structures

Hieroglyphic Stairway
The longest known Maya hieroglyphic inscription, comprising 2,200 glyphs carved across 72 steps of a broad pyramid. Commissioned by the ruler Smoke Shell in 749 AD, the stairway records the dynastic history of Copán from its founding through his own reign. Its decipherment in the 20th century transformed understanding of Maya literacy and political history.
Acropolis & Rosalila Temple
The elevated royal complex at the southern end of the site houses Copán's most sacred temples and elite residential structures. Tunnels bored beneath later construction have revealed the Rosalila Temple — an earlier structure preserved intact and still bearing its original polychrome stucco decoration, one of the finest preservation discoveries in Maya archaeology. A full-scale replica stands in the site museum.
Great Plaza Stelae
The broad ceremonial plaza holds a remarkable series of freestanding stone portrait monuments depicting Copán's rulers in elaborate costume. Unlike most Maya stelae, Copán's monuments are carved almost fully in the round, with figures projecting dramatically from the stone. The density of sculptural detail — feathered headdresses, jewellery, and hieroglyphic panels — makes them among the finest examples of stone carving in the pre-Columbian world.
Ball Court
One of the most refined ball courts in Mesoamerica, rebuilt at least three times on the same spot. Its sloping masonry playing surfaces are flanked by stone macaw-head markers, and the court is enclosed on its north end by the base of the Hieroglyphic Stairway pyramid, creating an architecturally dramatic ceremonial space.
