Temples & Sculpture
- Acropolis
- The largest structure at the site — an elongated platform 160 metres long and 31 metres tall supporting a series of temples, palaces, and tombs. Extraordinarily well-preserved stucco carvings cover much of its façade, including a massive winged figure flanking the entrance to the royal burial chamber. This figure, thought to depict the deified ruler Ukit Kan Le'k Tok', is unique in Maya art and remains the finest example of Late Classic stucco sculpture in the Yucatán. Traces of original polychrome paint still cling to sheltered sections of the carving.
- Oval Palace (La Redonda)
- An unusual curved structure whose oval plan sets it apart from the predominantly rectangular buildings of the Yucatán. Oval or round buildings in Maya architecture are rare and often associated with astronomical observation or with the wind deity Kukulcán. La Redonda's placement within the site suggests it served as a special-purpose ceremonial building connected to calendar observation.
- Twin Towers
- Two symmetrical structures framing the main plaza in a formal ceremonial arrangement also seen at Tikal and Yaxhá. The towers create axial sight lines across the plaza and likely marked key astronomical alignments during important calendar events. Their symmetrical placement reinforces the formally planned character of Ek Balam's ceremonial core.
