Temples & Plazas
- Main Temple Pyramids
- The ceremonial core of Iximché consists of four plazas, each flanked by twin-stairway pyramid temples facing across open ceremonial spaces. The temples follow a highland Maya Late Postclassic style distinct from the elaborate ornamental carving of the lowland Classic sites — their power derives from formal massing and their elevated position on a naturally defended plateau. Spanish conquistadors established the first capital of colonial Guatemala here in 1524, using the existing structures as a base.
- Ball Courts
- Two ball courts preserve the physical setting for the ritual game that continued to hold ceremonial importance in highland Guatemala into the 16th century. Smaller than the great Classic-period examples further north, their presence at the Kaqchikel capital confirms that the ball game remained a politically and spiritually significant institution at the time of the Spanish arrival.
- Ceremonial Altars
- Several altars throughout the site remain active places of Maya spiritual practice. Kaqchikel Maya communities continue to hold fire ceremonies here, burning incense, candles, and offerings of food and flowers on platforms that have been places of prayer for over 500 years. Iximché is among the most spiritually active Maya ruins in the world, bridging the pre-Columbian and living Maya heritage.
