Budget Backpacker

Two weeks across Mexico and Guatemala on a shoestring

Overview

La Ruta Maya is one of the most accessible budget destinations in the Americas. This two-week route covers the highlights of Mexico and Guatemala using a combination of ADO buses, shared shuttles, and hostels — spending US$40–55 per day including accommodation, food, transport, and site entrances. The secret is that the Maya world's greatest sites have no budget shortcuts: Tikal at dawn costs the same whether you stay in a luxury lodge or the cheapest hostel in Flores. What the budget approach sacrifices in comfort, it more than makes up for in encounters with other travellers and in flexibility.

Highlights

  • All major Yucatán sites on budget ADO buses
  • Tikal — possible on any budget with hostel beds in Flores
  • Palenque at a fraction of resort prices
  • Antigua's excellent budget hostel scene
  • Estimated daily spend: US$40–55
