Maya Heartland

Two weeks across Mexico, Belize, and Guatemala's greatest sites

Overview

The Maya Heartland route covers the geographic and cultural core of Maya civilization: the jungle cities of Chiapas (Palenque), the forests of Belize (Caracol), and the monumental Petén ruins of Guatemala (Tikal). Fourteen days is the minimum to do this route justice — plan for two weeks if you can. This is a trip for travellers comfortable with long bus rides, the occasional rough road, and the simple pleasure of an unexpected delay at a beautiful border. The route crosses three countries and four borders, with the spectacular boat crossing of the Usumacinta River as a highlight.

  • Palenque's jungle temples and cascading waterfalls
  • Tikal at dawn above the jungle canopy
